Joanne Freeman, '96
Joanne says that if it weren't for everyone at FMCC, she would have never went on for a bachelor's degree from SUNY IT which she earned in 2006. She originally came to FMCC to take two classes, typing and computers. As of July 2005, Joanne oversees the marketing and public relations for A. Johnson Plumbing and Heating, Inc. in Gloversville.

Traci (Kwiatkowski) DiMezza, '89
I attended FMCC after I graduated from Gloversville High School in 1987 and completed my associate's degree in 1989. As a freshman, I served as Freshman Senator. In my sophomore year, I was elected president of the student government. After graduating, I attended Siena College, received my bachelor's degree in political science, was admitted into Law School, and received my Juris Doctorate from Quinnipiac University in Connecticut. After being admitted to the New York State Bar, I was employed by a law firm in Westchester until 1996, until I moved back to Gloversville, opened my own law practice, and have built a substantial practice after nearly eleven years of practicing law.
FMCC was a wonderful start for me. I loved the school, I loved the faculty, and I loved being involved in the student government. I plan on encouraging my children to start with FMCC. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to share my story with you!

Thomas is pleased to say that his FMCC degree provided an opportunity to join GE in 1988. He continued his education at Montreat College, NC and received a B.B.A. This opened a door for Thomas at G.E. Energy Headquarters in Atlanta, GA where he expects to relocate and enter into a senior professional level position. He'd like to especially thank FMCC's "Mr. P." and "Jake" for a great start.
Thomas now lives in North Carolina with his wife, Bonnie. During his free time, Thomas enjoys golfing (12 months a year!). He notes his daughter is a freshman at SUNY Plattsburgh, his step-daughter is a senior at LeMoyne, and his stepson is a student right here at FMCC.

He and his wife, Susan, a communications specialist at a local hospital have three children, Nicole, Austin, and Jennifer.
Philip Maddaus, '76
I remember two instructors at FMCC who made a very favorable impression on me. One was Edward A. Serpa who taught physics and electronics. Once, Mr. Serpa said to the class, "The only true constant in life is change." He was very thorough.
Another was a mathematics instructor by the last name of Meachem (I believe his first name was Peter). Mr. Meachem had an interesting tendency of teaching the history of mathematics as well as the mathematical operations.
My major was electrical technology. After leaving FMCC, I went from one job to another until the fall of 1980 when I began working at the Scotia Branch of the Schenectady County Public Library (SCPL.org) first as a library page and in recent years as a library clerk.
Richard Payne, '91
Richard currently lives in Amsterdam, NY and is working as a sales representative for Lexington Industriers, Fulton County Chapter NYSARC, Inc. in Johnstown, NY where he procures meaningful work for Lexington's sheltered workshop program.
Joel Kwiatkowski, '80
I am a native of upstate New York having grown up in Broadalbin, NY.
I graduated from FMCC in 1980 with an AAS in Electrical Technology. I then continued my education path earning a BSEE from Rochester Institute of Technology in 1983. I started my career in engineering working for the first ten years between ITT in Nutley, New Jersey and General Electric in Syracuse, New York.
I obtained a Masters degree in Engineering Management from Syracuse University in 1993. Over the next five years I worked at Ericsson in Virginia and Lucent Technologies in New Jersey with a focus on wireless telecom development.
Since 1998 I have been working as an independent consultant. I formed my own company, JBK Consulting LLC, which supports telecom businesses throughout New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania for design and project management. I am based in Newburgh, New York (Orange County) which is 1 1/2 hours south of Albany, New York.
I have to say that my attendance through the Electrical Technology Program at FMCC was very good for preparation to the undergraduate program at RIT. FMCC was fun for me and I had good experiences with the faculty and other students at that time. I experienced another very good benefit at FMCC - Walter "Jake" Theurer, Associate Professor of Mathematics - as I worked with him as a Lab Tech at the College.
I can say that it is a very competitive economy out in the working world and I have experienced and survived a few corporate downsizings. As business continues along this path and always will, it is important to stay abreast of the latest tools and technologies. It is imperative to create visible methods to represent your unique abilities, skills, and quantifiable contributions and accomplishments in order to survive and thrive.
Best of luck to everyone at FMCC.
Jacques Ladouceur, '80
I chose to come to FMCC because of Mr. D. - you know him as Dr. Andrew Dinitto. I was recruited by several other schools but I trusted Mr. D. even though I knew very little about the school. My major was Political Science because of my interest on how the U.S. Government functions.
While attending FMCC, there were three teachers who made an impact on my life: Mr. D. taught me how to love people where they are at and to strive for excellence in all areas of my life; Dr. George Pilkey taught me the power of positive thinking and how to make light of any situation; and Miss Jean Morris proved to me over and over the potential I had to be the author within me and my unique ability to communicate with people.
I also loved my soccer experience. Mr. D., who was FMCC's soccer coach at the time, came after me strictly for the soccer program. I loved the feeling that we (the soccer team) were a big family. I liked the fact that this was the first time I knew that I can do something great with my life. Soccer to me was always like breathing. After I graduated from FMCC, I went to Howard University on a soccer scholarship.
I now live in southern California in a small town called Murrieta which is about 40 minutes north of San Diego. I originally came here to play soccer and decided to stay because I think it's a great place to raise a family. Family is very important to me; my mother has four children: Marie-France who is the oldest, Gerald, Philippe (who also attended FMCC), and me.
I've been married to my wife Marie-Claire for 22 years and we have an 18 year-old daughter named Tania-Jilda. When I look at the past, I can see how God has been directing my life even though I never really understood that. I love to play soccer for fun, coach young kids, and I belong to a very special organization called World Wide Dream Builders which helps people achieve their dreams and goals.
I have many goals in life: to be a better husband and a father; to publish my book and see it turned into a movie; to help moms stay home to raise their children; to teach kids the power of a dream and where it can take you; for people to feel better about themselves after leaving my presence; to love my wife deeper every year for the rest of my life.

Brent Trzaskos, '96
I am a native of Saratoga Springs, New York and now reside just north of the city in the town of Wilton. I truly enjoyed my time at FMCC and look back at those two years fondly.
I am proud to say that I was a member of the 1996 men's baseball team that went 26-5 and challenged for a regional title. After graduating from FM in 1996 with a degree in General Studies, I attended The College of St. Rose in Albany and earned a BA in Psychology. In 2002, I earned a MS in Industrial and Organizational Psychology at RPI in Troy, completing my thesis under the supervision of Professor Mike Kalsher.
For the past 12 years I have worked for Sears, Roebuck & Co. I am currently an area human resources manager for the northeast region, supporting approximately 60 stores throughout upstate New York and New England.
I am a big Atlanta Braves fan and also enjoy cycling, hiking in the Adirondacks, playing Monte with the boys and watching reruns of Cheers on TV and DVD. I'd love to hear from former or current FM students. You can contact me at bgt280@yahoo.com. I wish all the best to FM students and alumni!
Bill Demakakos, '79
I received an Alumni Newsletter a couple of months ago from FMCC. It was a rather pleasant surprise to have received it, and it brought back rather fond memories of my FMCC college days
. I was a student of Mr. Kover's and I recall vividly trying to stay ahead of him in my history readings to be prepared for one of his famous "Shot Guns". Mr. Kover had a great way of adding value to his history classes. Having taken at least two U.S. History classes with him as the professor along with the late Hazel Swart, I can say they were among the best college instructors that I had during my college experience. When I attended Brooklyn College as an evening student in the mid 1990's, I cited both Mr. Kover and Ms. Swart as my most memorable and influential teachers. It's great to see that Mr. Kover continues to remain active teaching History, not to forget Ice Fishing. I almost took Mr. Kover's Ice Fishing class when it was first offered in 1973, but I missed the January winter term due to other commitments. My association with FMCC began in September of 1970 and lasted on and off again into the spring semester of 1973. I received my A.A.S. from FMCC in 1979 while working full time by attending an evening school program at a local community college in Brooklyn. In 1973 I started working at AT&T as an overseas telephone operator, what was then only staffed by women, for what I planned to have been only a summer job. Well thirty summers later and a few company name changes, I accepted an early retirement offer from Verizon in late 2003 while on active military duty. I eventually deployed with my headquarters, 353d Civil Affairs Command, in 2004 for my second visit to Southwest Asia. My first was during Desert Storm in 1991. I have taken the liberty to include a couple of photos taken in Iraq during 2004. In August 2005 I reached my mandatory removal date, having enlisted as a Private in 1974, and retired from the Army Reserve as a Lieutenant Colonel. Presently I perform consulting work for Verizon Business as a telecommunications specialist, where most of my work centers on overseeing the installation of high speed fiber lines to support Verizon's Internet backbone and new video services. The telecommunications business has changed rather dramatically since my early days as an operator at AT&T. I have been married for thirty years. My wife Julia and I have three sons. The oldest is a Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force, the second oldest recently graduated with a degree in biology from Saint Francis College, Brooklyn, and our youngest starts his senior year at Colgate University in the fall. I hope to be fortunate enough to spot a few names of former classmates in future Alumni publications. Anyone interested in catching up can send me an email at Demakakos@Verizon.net.
Albert Johnson, '76
Although my first thought was to be a History teacher, I decided on an Accounting degree because "it paid more" - live and learn! I enjoyed my time at FMCC, especially learning from Bob Osborne and Jim Marra, who remain friends.
After graduating from FMCC in 1976, I attended Siena College where I graduated in 1978. I then obtained my CPA license in 1982. Between the years of 1978 and 2002, I worked for the Gloversville CPA firm of Tobin L. Cash, CPA.
In 1998, God called me to pastoral ministry and I served the Wells Methodist Church part-time until 2002. I then entered the full-time ministry - so much for making the big bucks! But I knew there was more to life than money. Now, I am pastor of the Mooers United Methodist Church which is three miles from Canada and six miles from Vermont where I happily reside with my wife, Dee, and dog, Gabby.
I'd like to end my story with a quote I love, "Intelligent belief dares to ask questions; true faith allows room for honest doubt; expect attacks and resistance when you question any status quo, religious, political, cultural, family or even your own assumptions; follow Christ on the path inside your heart no matter where it leads; live your faith as if it matters." - Anonymous from Homiletics Magazine
John K. Burgess, '98
After graduating from FMCC, I continued my college education at Plattsburgh State University (PSU) where I graduated with a degree in Mass Communication and a concentration in Broadcast Journalism. I also studied abroad in England at Trinity and All Saints College (T.A.S.C.) during the spring semester of 1999. After finishing at PSU I went to work at The Press Republican in Plattsburgh as a Reader/Designer which basically means that I design, layout and edit pages for the paper. I got the job through an internship program.
I'll always remember FMCC for the friends I made and the instructors, professors, and administration members that encouraged me to be the best that I can be and challenged me in more ways than I thought possible. Without those challenges and support I'd never be where I am today. Thanks FMCC! And thank you especially Mr. Hinkle! (John now resides in Mooers, NY)
Bernadette L. Skotarczak, '76
I received my AAS Degree in Nursing from FMCC and went on to receive a BS Degree in Organizational Management from Nyack College in Nyack, New York.
After 23 years of service, I am a retired veteran with the United States Air Force/New York Air National Guard retiring at the rank of Lieutenant Colonial. For 14 years, I was President/Owner/Operator of Zak's Waterfront Restaurant and Woods Hollow Marina on the Great Sacandaga Lake.
I am currently employed as a consultant with the consulting firm Booz, Allen, Hamilton, Mclean, VA. We contract with the Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families, Head Start Bureau, Washington, DC.
I live in Tribes Hill with my husband, Martin, who also attended FMCC. We have two children Neil and Melissa, who also graduated from FMCC. During my spare time I enjoy our summer home on The Great Sacandaga Lake or our condo in Cape Coral, Florida.
Brian J. Wing, '70
I received my degree in Liberal Arts from FMCC in 1970. I went on to graduate from the University of Buffalo and earned a Masters of Public Administration at SUNY Albany. Currently, I am the New York State Medicaid Director responsible for managing a program that serve 4.2 million New Yorkers with an annual budget of $47 billion.
I've spent 30 years in state and local government administration, including nine years as the State Commissioner of Social Services and Temporary & Disability Assistance.
I enjoy serving on the Advisory Board of SUNY Albany Rockefeller College. I am a past Advisory Committee Member of Cornell University School of Human Ecology and currently live in Castleton, New York.
William West, '77
Of all the schools I attended, my time at FMCC was the most enjoyable and rewarding. My only regret is that it was not a four year school as I would have loved to stay and finish my education there. The atmosphere at FMCC and its professors gave me a mind set to pursue knowledge while at the same time make it an enjoyable experience. This is the first chance for me to say thank you.
After graduating from FMCC, I went on to SUNY Binghamton to receive a Bachelors in Environmental Science. I am now the Superintendent of Water & Wastewater for the Town of Guilderland, New York.
Without my positive experience at FMCC, only God knows what road I would have taken. But one thing I know for sure is that it would not have been to Binghamton. (William now lives in Altamont, New York and enjoys hunting, fishing, and gentleman farming.)
Rosemarie Dixon, '84
I used my degree in Secretarial Science to work as an administrator at a college where I then got a Bachelors Degree in Liberal Arts and a promotion which started a 17-year career in higher education fundraising. I received a Masters Degree in Public Administration at another college where I worked as the Director of Alumni Relations and Annual Giving. After 17 years of asking for money from alumni, parents, and friends, I hung up my tin cup and am now working as an office administrator at Massachusetts General Hospital. (Rosemarie lives in Somerville, MA.)
Diane G. (Gifford) McGahan, '69
After graduating with a Secretarial Certificate, I moved to New Hampshire where I still live today. I began working for Yankee Magazine in Dublin, New Hampshire and became Advertising Manager for several of their publications including the Old Farmer's Almanac.
After giving birth to my son, I then joined the staff of New Hampshire Distributors, Inc. in Concord - an Anheuser-Busch, Inc. wholesaler - where I remain as Sales & Marketing Administrative Assistant. I still visit Johnstown and the surrounding area occasionally as I have family members living in the vicinity.
I am married to Joseph and we have one son, Justin, and one grandchild, Rachel.
Kenneth M. Blakeslee, Jr., '80
A native of Johnstown (J.H.S. class of '72), I graduated from FMCC in 1980, receiving an AAS degree in Electrical Technology. I was hired directly from FMCC by IBM Corporation as a result of a recruiting visit that was held during my final semester. I am very happy to report that I am still with IBM, and celebrated my induction into IBM's Quarter Century Club last June. I give much of the credit for my successful career to the Electrical Technology Program at FMCC as that is where I first grew a fondness for technology.
My extracurricular activities at FMCC also helped prepare me for the corporate world. As President of the Elec Tech Club and a Senator serving the Student Government, I was exposed for the first time to having people look to me for guidance. Those experiences eventually paid huge dividends as my career evolved.
My career started as a technician and I eventually worked my way into management. I am now a Program Manager responsible for audits and business controls associated with a Strategic Outsourcing contract IBM has with the Boeing Company. Working for a company like IBM has enabled me to experience living in some great cities across the country. I started in Burlington, Vermont then relocated to Manassas, Virginia (just outside Washington, D.C.) continuing my job as a test equipment technician. I returned to New York for a couple of years in Poughkeepsie in a development testing laboratory, followed by a couple more years as a Customer Engineer in Albany. A great career opportunity then took me to Tucson, Arizona for four years as a Service Planning Representative. When IBM relocated the entire operation to Boulder, Colorado in '93, I decided to seek other possibilities. It was at that point when I landed a position as a Field Service Manager in Seattle, Washington.
It was in Seattle where I met my wife and we eventually adopted a baby girl from an orphanage in China. In '99 I accepted a transfer to Raleigh, North Carolina as a Project Manager only to realize that it was not where I wanted to raise my family and finish my career. So when an opening in IBM's Global Services Division presented an opportunity to return to Seattle in 2002 I jumped at it and now believe that I am here to stay.
I'd love to get back in touch with some of my old classmates from '78 - '80. If anyone is out there and would like to get in touch, please feel free to email me at blakes@us.ibm.com.
Robin (Seeley) Pozefsky, '76
I grew up in Hagaman, New York. Between the years of 1966-1970, I lived in both Danville, Illinois and Hannibal, Missouri. It was in 1970 that I returned to Hagaman. I decided I wanted to attend college but stay close to home and FMCC had the courses I needed to pursue a teaching degree.
There were several people who had a big impact on my life from FMCC including my geology teacher, Walt Smith, who became a friend of mine. He had me so interested in geology, I almost changed my major to Science! Also, my history teacher, Jonas Kover! I became very interested in the area history because of him. And then there was the person who made the biggest impact on my life, Richard Pozefsky, the man who became my husband of 28 years now! Richard used to run the radio station at FMCC which played all day. Various music groups used to visit the station including Pink Floyd.
Even though I didn't continue with obtaining my teaching degree, F-M helped me through some difficult, personal troubles and I would like to thank the College for saving me. I've been working in retail for the past 20 years and love it. Richard and I live in Ansonia, Connecticut and we have two grown children - we're all very happy. My two sisters and one brother still live in the Fulton-Montgomery area.
To all of FMCC, best of luck.
Darryl White, '82
I graduated from FMCC in 1982 with an AAS in Electrical Technology. I remember sharing some classes with a guy named John Jablonski. When I got the recent alumni newsletter and read about John, it made me think about the career journey that started for me at FM.
After I got my associates degree, I went on to RIT in Rochester and got my bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering Technology. I then went to work for Factron/Schlumberger in Latham, New York as a test engineer working on automated electronic test equipment. In 1988, I went to work as an electrical engineer at Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory in Niskayuna, NewYork. My work is involved in instrumentation systems for the nuclear reactors that are used in our Navy submarines. Currently, I am lead engineer for submarine reactor Instrumentation and Controls systems.
During that time in the late 80's early 90's, I worked at the College as an adjunct professor in the EET program which was also very rewarding. After all this time, I still have fond memories of the people and professors and students I met during my time at FM. RIT is a great college, but I still consider some of my best professors to be the ones that taught right here at FMCC.
My wife, Kelly (Bartholoma) White, is also an FMCC AAS graduate, class of '86. She is employed as an account clerk at the Fulton County Residential Health Care Facility. We live in Broadalbin with our two children whom I hope also choose to start their college education at FMCC.
Carol J. Edwards, '79
I am currently in my 20th year as a School Nurse/Teacher for the Gloversville School District. I welcome visits from student nurses who would like to learn about school nursing. If you are interested, feel free to email me at cje@nycap.rr.com.
My husband Dean and I have three grown children. During my spare time, I enjoy golfing, walking, reading, sewing, and traveling.
Terry L. White, '87
Since graduating in 1987, I have written more than a dozen books. Most of them are available as e-books at www.ebooksonthe.net. My novels Ancient Memories, Mystick Moon, The Last Priestess, Mustard Seed, Crazy Quilt, Hang Your Head Over, Imagine, Hell or High Water and my narrative poetry Runaway Hearts are available at Amazon.com. I did it!
I am also a bead artist and musician.
Patrcik Prendergast, '75
When I graduated, I didn't have a robe so my English professor, Hazel Swart, let me wear hers. It had a purple collar, a Masters or Ph.D. robe I believe.
My years at FMCC were some of the best of my life and I have led a charmed life. I like to think of Hazel Swart's robe as an omen of things to come.
Today, I live in Arlington, VA where I attend George Mason University as a candidate for a Masters in Special Education. As was true in my days at FMCC, I need all the prayers I can get. I graduated from Marymount University in 1993.
In 1973-74, I worked as a house parent for the Lexington Training Center.I was just a kid and it was a great responsibility. Although mistakes were made, I was very fortunate.
You can find my stories in the '73-'74 copies of The Logo, FMCC's liteary magazine. Hazel Swart motivated me to write. I've since been published many places.
I've always wanted to return to FMCC but life had other plans. I worked in the Merchant Marine from '78 - '83. Although I like to brag and tell stories about those years, they were not half as magical as my time at FMCC. My first year, I used to hitchhike to and from school every day. There was an FMCC sign which read "Let Each Become As He Is Capable of Being."
Thank you for carrying on a tradition which helps thousands of young people.
You can link to my stories by going to http://mason.gmu.edu/~pprende1. Note: "Skeeze Whitlow" is one of my pen names. |
