Fulton-Montgomery Community College       SPRING 2007

The INTERACT program brings together FMCC Emeritus Professors and Seniors in the community for lively discussions, workshops and day trips to interesting and historic places.

This semester's INTERACT program for seniors will provide a diversity of programs with opportunities for travels to art and history venues and contemplation of numbers and stages of life. Three emeritus professors will lend their formidable skills to explore the significant battles of our Mohawk Valley, to investigate the often murky world of numbers and how they affect our lives, and lastly to enjoy the fascinating New England Village of Stockbridge, Massachusetts.

Understanding Everyday Statistics                Classroom C-127

Statistics

Professor John Vadney will offer a clearer understanding of the statistical vocabulary and the concepts commonly used in newspapers, magazines, advertisements, and television.  It is well known that an audience is often impressed by those who use (misuse?) numbers.  Materials will be presented to provide listeners the ability to interpret verbal, visual, and written arguments that attempt to persuade us to accept the point of view of others including buying their products.  Words such as average, median, deviation, abnormal and correlation will be clarified.  Probability will be discussed only in the most general terms, and only to illustrate basic concepts.  The amount of prior mathematical knowledge needed is absolutely minimal.  Formulas utilized in demonstrations will be displayed, but no calculations will be required.  If desired, the student can bring an inexpensive calculator with a square root key.   $20.00  Sect. IB1711x1 3 Sessions Tuesdays, March 27 and April 3 & 10 - 2:00-4:00 PM
