Finding Financial Aid for 4-year colleges and universities

Know the financial aid deadlines:

(Each school is different so be aware of what the deadlines are)

  • If you do not already have one, apply for a PIN number at http://www.pin.ed.gov/: this 4 digit number identifies you to the Department of Education and is used as an electronic signature
  • Apply for Federal Financial Aid at www.fafsa.ed.gov
  • If you are a New York State Resident apply for TAP on the link provided after you file your FAFSA
  • Check with institutions you are applying to determine if any other financial aid forms are required
  • Apply for scholarships and grants; a growing number of scholarships are available for transfer students with a good grade point averag
  • Look into Work Study programs at the college
  • Keep organized:  take notes, write calendar reminders for deadlines and contacts
  • Surf the web for financial aid advice and scholarships
