The Transfer Process
EARLY PLANNING IS THE KEY TO TRANSFER SUCCESS!!
- Determine Your Career Goals - IDENTIFYING A CAREER PATH
Career planning and transfer planning are tied together.
The FMCC career center located in the Student Development Center can help explore possible career paths that are directly related to your interests, skills and values.
- Choose a Major
Deciding on a major is easier once you have determined your career goals. Ask yourself what is the appropriate major at the four-year college to prepare me for my chosen career path?
Also, am I in the correct major at FMCC that will maximize the number of credits in the four-year major I have chosen?
Most colleges and universities will accept 60-68 credits from a two-year college
- Make Appropriate Course Selections
Review FMCC articulation agreements with other colleges. Meet with your advisor to select courses that will most likely transfer.
- Researching Colleges/Universities
The FMCC Career Lab contains information regarding colleges and universities; we have college catalogs, view books and videos. The Internet is also a good resource to begin your search.
*When researching four-year colleges, you will need to determine whether the college/university has your intended major. Also do not allow tuition cost to drive your search process in the beginning.
- Narrow Down Choices
Once you have researched transfer colleges, it is important to narrow down your choices. While one particular college may be your ideal choice, it is important to have a back up plan.
*Visit the campus of any college you are considering, talk with students, faculty and admissions counselors. Get on their mailing lists.
- Finalize Your Plans
When it is time to apply, make sure you know the application deadlines for each college. You will need official transcripts from the FMCC Registrars Office as well as letters of recommendation.
